Barbara Buttrick

Barbara Buttrick was a self-taught flyweight boxer who overcame much sexist abuse and disapproval to pursue her sport.

After hundreds of fights as a fairground booth boxer, she emigrated from the UK to the United States, where she became the first-ever women’s World Boxing Champion.

In 1989, Barbara founded the Women’s International Boxing Federation. She spent much of her own money to promote the sport, which became an Olympic event in 2012. The continuing growth of women’s boxing is the legacy of Barbara’s courage and determination.
